Has your plumbing in Sydney been installed correctly?

The shiny taps, glossy tiles and new shower head might look amazing but could be hiding plumbing that hasn't been installed correctly.
Summary

Poor plumbing installation can cause water damage to your house

Nu Trend are licensed plumbers that service thousands of locations each year, solving plumbing problems. We get asked all the time ‘is my plumbing ok’ and it is nearly impossible to answer because in 95% of cases we can’t see it, most of your plumbing is out of sight. Unlike a broken window, most of your property’s plumbing is normally underground or beneath a concrete slab so you can’t see all the connections, joins or falls to know if it is good or not.

Although what does alarm us is the number of properties in Sydney that we visit where the plumbing hasn’t been installed correctly or to Australian Standards. It may be functioning but it doesn’t meet all the legal requirements or even current Australian Standards to ensure the correct flows of water or sewage. Sometimes it is because the piping is so old that the standards or requirements have changed since it was first put in, in other situations it is simply poor quality work that was done recently.

Why does it matter if the plumbing hasn't been installed correctly?

If plumbing hasn’t been installed correctly it may not work as efficiently as it should.

The grey area for most property owners needing help with their plumbing in Sydney is in situations where the system works most of the time but, will ultimately either fail or not deliver what a correctly designed and installed set up should provide. During heavy rain or over time when the pipes get blocked with debris is when you usually discover this to be a problem.

This is where the rectification work can become costly because what most plumbers will do is try and resolve a blockage issue with a short term remedy rather than discovering the underlying problem. So this might be a cheap plumbing installation initially that leads to ongoing costs over the lifetime of the property.

How a plumber ripped off this Sydney home owner

For these property owners they were experiencing blockages once a month for twelve months straight. They had been paying for a plumber to come and rectify the blockage and were told it was due to hair, sanitary pads or kids throwing toys down the drain. This is a typical scenario and a good way for a plumber to make a recurring income, the house owner has no idea wha was really happening.

We were called out and did two things to try and sort out the blocked drain plumbing problem;

1. A Water Jet Blast service to clear the blockage and make it easier to see inside the pipework.

2. A CCTV Camera Inspection to see deep inside the plumbing installation.

What did our plumbing inspection uncover about this piping installation in Sydney?

Once we completed our inspection here are all the things we discovered.

  • When we inspected the bathroom it looked ok on the surface, passable and no obvious signs or issues.

  • Although when we looked into the plumbing we then discovered;
    • The wrong sized piping had been used.

    • The wrong connections.

    • A 90mm pipe installed where it should be 100mm

    • PVC piping turning into earthenware and back again.

    • 90 and 45 degree bends used in clear out situations that are illegal.

    • The wrong gradients used for the piping which was leading to water back falling.

To rectify the work completely would require the bathroom to be demolished to get access to the piping and do it all correctly. We offered this as a choice for the property owner who declined. So instead we were able to provide some remedial work to try rectify as many of the underlying issues as possible.

While we won’t be back every month like the other plumber, it is an example of making a choice between getting short term plumbing repairs vs finding out the underlying issue of a blockage. It also highlights the poor tactics used by plumbing contracts to make more money from customers.
