Bathroom renovation before and after comparison

Nu Trend was contracted as the bathroom renovations company to build three new bathroom in this home in Mosman. This project, located in Raglan Street, Mosman, was one of our most enjoyable to deliver, due largely to the client’s level of preparation and their cooperative approach from the outset.

From the initial enquiry, it was clear that the client had already taken significant steps toward planning their renovation. During our first phone call, they communicated that they had selected all the major elements for the bathroom, including tiles and fixtures, and were ready to proceed.

They simply required a site inspection and a formal quotation.

Product Selection and Supplier Collaboration

Upon visiting the site, we reviewed the selected products, which had been sourced from The Bathroom Collective, one of our trusted suppliers known for offering a broad range of products, from mid-range to luxury.

For this project, the client selected Vola tapware, a premium brand recognised for its superior quality, aesthetic design, and functionality. In our professional experience, Vola remains one of the top-performing tap ware manufacturers available in Australia.

This bathroom was designed with a refined modern coastal aesthetic, blending clean lines with subtle textures and a light, calming palette. Every design element works harmoniously to create a space that feels both serene and sophisticated. The neutral tones, organic shapes, and emphasis on light contribute to an atmosphere of relaxation and calm. The use of brass fixtures introduces a sense of quiet luxury, while the simplicity of the layout keeps the focus on form and materiality.

Feature wall tiling
The standout feature in this space is the textured square mosaic wall tiles used on the rear wall, behind both the shower and the freestanding bath. These tiles are likely natural stone or designed to mimic it, and they bring a soft tactile dimension to the space. Their varied surface texture gently plays with light and shadow, adding depth without overwhelming the overall palette.

The square format and imperfect texture evoke a handcrafted, artisanal feel, which contrasts beautifully with the sleek finishes elsewhere. This subtle feature wall becomes the visual anchor of the space, adding understated sophistication while reinforcing the natural, calm aesthetic.

The main bathroom is the hero of any home and this one looks stunning with its modern but minimalist styling.

Materials used

  • Tiles: Large format, light-toned tiles are used on the floor and side walls to provide continuity and minimise grout lines, enhancing the sense of space and calm.

  • Tap ware: Brushed brass fixtures are used consistently throughout—on the rain shower, hand shower, towel rails, bath spout, and mixer taps. The matte gold tone elevates the overall look and complements the pale tiles perfectly.

  • Bath: The freestanding oval bath has a soft sculptural form. Its gentle curves contrast with the geometric grid of the feature wall, creating visual balance.

  • Glass: A frameless glass panel separates the shower from the rest of the bathroom without interrupting the visual flow. This choice maintains an open, airy atmosphere.

Functional design

  • The niche shelf in the shower is neatly integrated into the feature wall, echoing its tile pattern while providing practical storage.

  • A ceiling-mounted rain shower and handheld spray offer dual-functionality without visual clutter.

  • The heated towel rail on the side wall adds comfort and utility without compromising design aesthetics.

Lighting and ambience
Natural light filters through the high window, softening the hard surfaces and enhancing the sense of space. The overall brightness of the room helps highlight the texture of the tiles and the elegant contrast of the gold fixtures.

As we mentioned earlier the styling of the ensuite was done to compliment the other bathrooms and give the home a feeling of uniformity from room to room.

As we mentioned earlier the styling of the ensuite was done to compliment the other bathrooms and give the home a feeling of uniformity from room to room. The unique aspect of this bathroom was the little seat that we designed in the corner of the shower.

Repairing the subfloor during a bathroom renovation

Client expectations and concerns

Prior to commencement, the client expressed some valid concerns based on previous negative experiences with other companies. In particular, they had encountered issues with property damage and unexpected variations added during the build process. As a result, they were hoping to work with a bathroom renovator that could provide a transparent and fixed pricing structure.

We were clear and upfront that while we could provide a fixed price for elements within our defined scope, certain unforeseeable issues—typically discovered during demolition—might result in necessary variations. This includes structural issues, illegal plumbing, or degraded materials concealed behind existing tiles or fixtures. The client appreciated the transparency and acknowledged the inherent challenges that come with renovating older properties.

Site challenges and variations

During the demolition phase, we identified a number of structural issues that needed to be addressed. These included:

  • A subfloor that required complete replacement due to deterioration. It was so badly damaged that it would have been dangerous to build on.

  • Cracked and unstable brickwork – Render on adjacent walls that was breaking down due to age and improper application.

In each instance, we paused the project to consult with the client. We provided clear explanations, detailing the nature of the problem, why it needed to be rectified, and how the required work aligned with the National Construction Code and Australian Standards for waterproofing and structural integrity.

No additional work was carried out without the client’s full understanding and consent.

Moving the location of taps and drains in a bathroom renovation

If you move the location of the pipes that supply water or take waste away from a bathroom you can effectively change the layout of the room. Taps can be placed on different walls or different heights or drains can be installed in a different location on the floor as well.

For this bathroom renovation we moved the taps to suit a different layout and we use laser guided precision when doing so to ensure everything is placed in the exact location it needs to be and there is little chance of water leaking or other problems occuring.

Bathroom renovation interior design highlights

Under vanity lighting

Adding additional mood lighting to a bathroom can help you create a different feel without needing to use the ceiling lights. It can also be practical by creating ambient lighting to have a shower or bath.

Walk in shower

A walk in shower can be designed to be level with the floor, so no climbing over small hobs. In this bathroom the glass shower screen was custom made to have minimal joins and provide enough space to fit a bath as well.

Custom made vanity

For this bathroom renovation, the owners opted for bespoke vanity units that perfectly blend style and functionality. Featuring a unique design with textured doors and slim handles.

Maintaining quality and communication

One of the key elements we maintained throughout the renovation was stringent quality control. Whether during demolition, rendering, Gyprock, or sanding—phases that are typically messy and disruptive—we ensured that either myself or my business partner, Robbie, was on site to supervise. Our team took care to clean up regularly, vacuum dust, and keep the client informed of when tradespeople would be on site. This allowed the homeowner to better coordinate their daily routines and minimised disruption.

While no renovation is entirely without its challenges, we worked diligently to ensure this project progressed as smoothly as possible. The end result met our high standards and, more importantly, fulfilled the client’s vision. The tile layout, choice of finishes, and overall construction quality were completed to a standard we are proud to showcase.

We’ve documented this project in full, including detailed images and specifications, which are available to view on our website. For anyone considering a bathroom renovation—especially in older buildings where unforeseen conditions are likely—this project highlights the importance of planning, open communication, and working with licensed, experienced professionals.
