The team at Nutrend are dedicated to delivering an exceptional product. They take the time upfront to work through all design elements, physically mark out all items to resolve any coordination issues and improvement opportunities. This phase is so helpful to make sure there aren’t problems during the build, at which point changes are more costly.

Their site set up was very professional and they maintained a clean work area, continually tidying up after their team and trades.

They do go above and beyond to ensure the best possible finish and do not cut corners.

I am thrilled with the end result and would happily recommend the team.

Renovating an old bathroom in Carlton, Sydney to make it look more modern

Nu Trend was contracted by Patricia as a bathroom renovator in the suburb of Carlton, Sydney to deliver a complete bathroom renovation to make it feel fresh & modern.  The home is a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom house built in 1920 with a floor size of 110m2. Beyond the gorgeous sandstone detailed facade, this endearing character home has lots of classic period features just a few steps from shops, cafes and trains in Allawah and Carlton.

The owner wanted to renovate the bathroom so that it would compliment the rest of the house that had living areas set beneath wonderfully high decorative ceilings, timber floors, picture rails and a very bright, open plan layout.

A lot of people ask us about how hard it is to renovate old houses including ones that have heritage features and the answer is everything is possible. The only limitations are budget and if there are specific heritage listing requirements that have to be met. Nu Trend can renovate large, medium or small bathrooms in Sydney using our team of experienced renovation contractors which include;

  • Plumbers
  • Electrician
  • Painter
  • Tiler
  • Carpenter
  • Waterproofer
  • Renovation builder

This means you can deal with a single company like Nu Trend to manage the plumbing changes, electrical fittings, wall or floor tiling, painting and installation of new toilets, vanities and more.

The scope of work for this bathroom renovation

The scope of work for this home included a number of items and this is why bathroom renovation costs will vary depending on the skills of the contractor and how much work is involved. For this project our scope of work included;

  • Bathroom demolition.
  • Preparing the walls and floors.
  • New floor and wall sheeting.
  • Waterproofing.
  • New tiling installation.
  • Finishing off with fixture and furniture installation, painting and lighting.
  • Remedial repairs to the exterior walls.
  • Plumbing adjustments.

Getting an old bathroom renovated with a DIY interior design

Patricia initiated contact with our company to undertake the renovation of her family bathroom, citing its outdated appearance and lack of cohesion with the overall aesthetic of the rest of the home as the primary concern. Demonstrating a keen eye for style and possessing prior experience in renovation projects, Patricia presented detailed mock-ups of her desired bathroom transformation, inclusive of pre-selected fixtures and a 3D virtual layout.

Our collaboration with Patricia proved highly gratifying, culminating in the realisation of one of our most exemplary bathroom renovations to date.

Employing a large format tile scheme spanning from the floor to the walls, accented by a subway feature tile, we achieved a visually striking ensemble wherein the blue hue of the feature tile harmoniously complemented the golden fittings. What made this project so good was Patricia’s meticulous attention to detail, evidenced by the development of her comprehensive 3D virtual design.

This made it very straight forward for our team to collaborate with Patricia to refine the design for optimal functionality and spatial utilisation while we ensured total compliance with Australian Building Standards. It meant we could achieve a seamless fusion of practicality and aesthetic appeal.

Throughout the course of the project there were a couple of unforeseen challenges which necessitated adjustments to the scope of work and budget required. This included;

  • There was a deterioration of the limestone render on the walls which needed to be repaired. As much as we take care when using equipment inside the room, sometimes the vibrations can cause old wall coverings to come loose.

  • We also discovered non-compliant plumbing drainage that necessitated rectification to align with Australian regulatory standards. The benefit of working with Nu Trend is we are licensed renovators and plumbers which meant we could install the correct plumbing as part of the work being done.

Notwithstanding these hurdles, we take immense pride in the successful outcome achieved through our collective efforts, the photos and video tells the real story (we hope you agree!)

Is it easy to design your own bathroom?

When getting a bathroom renovation some people will choose to hire an interior designer who will provide ideas for the colours, textures, materials, layout and styling of the bathroom. Although you don’t always have to go to that extent. Patricia has demonstrated that it is very easy to do it yourself, it just takes some time and patience.

Once the room is measured you can use online bathroom planning software to play around with different ideas to create your new design. What can make things easier is replacing items like for like, i.e, each item is in the same location so that the toilet is replaced using the same connections etc.

Without having to worry about the location of items all the focus and energy can be put towards colour, texture and styling.

The steps that are really easy;

  • Finding inspiration; you can get ideas from TV shows, magazines, interior design websites and even bathroom product manufacturers like Reece who have a huge gallery of inspiration available with the latest trends.
  • Creating a layout; you can get a piece of paper and pencil to draw up different layouts or there are lots of online bathroom planning tools available like the one from Reece called Imagin3D. It even creates a list of products for you so you can purchase them quickly.

What can be difficult?
  • Spatial planning; Bathrooms are often small, so efficient use of space is crucial. You’ll need to consider fixture placement, traffic flow, and storage solutions so that you design a bathroom that is practical as well as stylish.
  • Building codes and regulations: These can vary by location and can impact things like plumbing placement and ventilation. Other aspects include plumbing and electrical work that might have to get adjusted to meet current standards or laws.

How can you make designing your own bathroom easier?
  • A clear vision; the more focussed you are about the style and layout you want to create the better. It guides all of your decision making to make the process fast and efficient.
  • Decide on a budget; you have to be realistic, if you have a $20,000 budget then allow for 10-15% in variances and be clear with any renovation contractor. This will save you a lot of time getting quotes and choosing the right contractor.
  • Make sure the room is measured accurately; you must have accurate room measurements to ensure the right spacing between items and that everything can fit correctly.

So, while designing your own bathroom can be a rewarding experience, it’s important to be realistic about the challenges involved. If you’re comfortable with some planning and potentially consulting a professional for the trickier bits, then designing your dream bathroom can be stress free and very practical to achieve.

Interior design ideas used for this bathroom renovation in Carlton, Sydney

Wall hung vanity in the bathroom
This is the modern way of installing a vanity in a bathroom. Wall hung vanities create an illusion of space because you can see the flooring and it ‘floats’ in the room making it feel larger than it is.

The practical benefits also include the ability to keep the bathroom clean by being able to get under the vanity rather than dirt collecting around a floor mounted unit.

Timber vanity in a bathroom
Using timber in a bathroom can give it a feeling of warmth and luxury. Light colour timber can very easily blend into any interior design style to compliment the hard surfaces of the tiles on the floors or walls.

Drain waste
To save money on renovations of a shower some people will choose to install a simple drain waste that you can buy from Bunnings or Reece.

These are fine of course, but if you want a touch of luxury then, a custom made floor waste can be integrated into the floor tiling so that it becomes almost ‘invisible’ when you look into the room.

The wider opening can also capture more water too.

Subway wall tiling
Subway tiling is a classic feature that can be used in the interior design of a bathroom renovation. They can be installed vertically or horizontally to create a texture on the wall that adds interest to a room and a touch of luxury.

Keeping original features
For bathrooms that have original period features you can retain them when renovating. You don’t have to remove things like windows, shelving, cornices or other period features because they can be retained.

It’s possible to carefully remove them and build them back into the final bathroom if needed.

This is an ideal way to blend old & new if you want to keep some of the character of the home.

Combined bath and shower
To save space a combo bath and shower can be placed in the corner of a bathroom to create flexibility or choice for people wanting to get clean.

Nu-Trend will make sure all the materials and rubbish that are not used are removed neatly ensuring your property isn’t left in a mess and neighbours are happy.

PRECISE MEASUREMENTS & PREPARATION
